“The Great Pie Plate Mix-Up of Maple Gap”
MAPLE GAP — A brief commotion followed last Sunday’s church potluck when longtime resident and expert pie-maker Deborah Livingston discovered that her favorite pie plate had gone missing from the fellowship hall.
The dish in question, a clear glass pie plate engraved with the name “Deborah” - a gift from her daughter years ago - has reportedly been a fixture at every bake sale, homecoming, and dessert table in Maple Gap since 2012.
“I set it down right beside the banana pudding,” Livingston said Monday morning. “By the time I went back to collect my things, it was gone. I just stood there thinking, ‘Well, bless it, my pie plate has up and left me.’”
Word of the incident traveled quickly through town, prompting an informal search that included a sweep of the Corner Cup Café’s kitchen and a brief discussion of whether a “Lost Bakeware Bulletin” might be added to the Sunday announcements.
By Wednesday evening, the mystery was solved when Lucille Cordell arrived at church carrying the missing plate - freshly washed, polished, and ready to be returned.
“I accidentally picked it up after the potluck,” Cordell admitted. “I thought it was mine. I’d brought brownies and potato salad, so it didn’t even occur to me until I got home and realized I’d come back with one too many pie plates.”
Witnesses reported good-natured laughter throughout the fellowship hall as the two friends exchanged hugs and assurances that no pie-related charges would be filed.
“Lucille’s borrowed sugar, butter, and now my bakeware,” Livingston said with a grin. “I reckon it was only a matter of time.”
The incident has since been classified by residents as a “harmless case of mistaken bakeware.” The Maple Gap Gazette can confirm that both friendship and faith remain intact - and the pie plate, once missing, is now safely home on Livingston’s kitchen shelf.
